Tips on caring for your pearls

June 10th, 2010

Cosmetics, perfume, hairspray all contain chemicals that may dull the luster of a pearl over time. Pearls should be the last thing you put on (after the application of makeup, perfume, and hair products). It is a good idea to wipe your pearls with a soft, moist cloth each week to remove any traces of these harmful elements. Only use jewelry cleaners that are labeled safe for pearls.

Pearls are best stored in a soft cloth pouch or separate, lined compartment of your jewelry box as other hard or sharp jewelry can scratch them.

If you wear your pearls often, it is best to have them restrung at least once a year with an individual knot between each pearl.

Never use toothbrushes or any type of abrasive material to clean your Pearls. Never expose them to dish or laundry detergents, bleaches, powdered cleansers, baking soda or any ammonia based cleaner like Windex. Never use any type of ultrasonic cleaner or steam cleaner.

Never store your pearls in any type of plastic bag. Plastic can emit a chemical that will cause the surface of the Pearl to deteriorate.

Never leave your pearls around a direct source of heat such as a fireplace mantle, on top of a television set, or stove.

Never store your Pearls in a very dry room or in a safe deposit box for a long time. Your Pearls need a little moisture like your skin so that they will not dry out.

All About Pearls

June 10th, 2010

Cultured Pearls result from a small irritant (usually a natural shell bead and/or piece of fleshy tissue) implanted into living oysters (Akoya and South Sea pearls) or mussels (Freshwater pearls). The oysters or mussels secrete a substance called “nacre” which bonds to the irritant. The resulting layers of nacre form the pearls. Nacre is composed of perfecly aligned microscopic crystals; when light passes along the axis it’s reflected and refracted by the crystals, producing a warm and inviting glow of light and subtle color.

Akoya: Cultivated in Japan, China, and Vietnam. Akoyas range in size from 3mm to 10mm with white or gold body color and a variety of beautiful pink, yellow, and green hues with intense brilliant luster.

South Sea: Cultivated in Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Myanmar. South Sea pearls are known for their extraordinary size and satiny luster. Color ranges from silver-white to golden, sizes from 8mm-18mm and larger.

Tahitian: Cultivated in French Polynesia, South Pacific, Cook Islands and Fiji. Tahitian pearls have an exotic color palette ranging from light gray to midnight black with intense overtones of pistachio, aubergine, and blue. Size ranges from 8mm to 17mm.

Freshwater: Cultivated in China, Japan, and the United States. Freshwater pearls are known for their variety of shapes with colors ranging from pink, orange, lavender and white as well as enhanced trendy colors. Sizes range from 1mm to 14mm.
